Album Review: Jonny Hepbir Quartet – Get Rich Or Die Swingin’
Jonny Hepbir Quartet: Get Rich Or Die Swingin’
Beginning with an upbeat version of Undecided, this is a chance for vocalist Sara Oschlag to show her adeptness at squeezing lots of words into a very small space. She does it brilliantly, as well as doing a great job at singing in different languages and adding an emotional depth to each track.
With a good choice of tunes and a great swing feel throughout, this album captures the classic French sound of gypsy jazz.
Even without a drummer present the band swings along nicely and features some terrific guitar solos from Jonny Hepbir.
The musicians in this band play together regularly and this shows in their interactions as soloists. You can hear and feel the chemistry between Sara Oschlag and bassist Dan Sheppard when they trade fours on Exactly Like You.
Dan Sheppard’s virtuosity is given more time to shine on the upbeat rendition of Bernie’s Tune and on the final number (my favourite tune on the album) What Is This Thing Called Love?
Excellent soloing throughout and an album with a lovely feel.
I give this album 10/10.
